Many kids today have not heard of the name Billy Joel, let alone his music. That’s partly because most of them were not even born yet when Billy released his final album.
While that may be a tragedy, the good news is that it’s never too late to get to know the Piano Man and his legacy to the music industry. If you don’t want to miss out on that, here’s a list of his albums that we recommend you check out:
While his very successful music career is out for the public to scrutinize, Billy Joel’s private life remains very reserved and… well, private. He doesn’t like talking about his personal life outwardly.
Despite that, we still managed to get our hold on some details about his kids, past relationships, and loved ones. So, if you’re interested, we’ll be talking all about those in this article!
Billy Joel, real name William Martin Joel, was born on May 9, 1949. That means he turned 73 years old this year. It definitely felt like it was just yesterday when he was such a young, vibrant musician playing his heart out with his piano.
On his 70th birthday, Billy looked back on his decade-long career and opened up about growing old:
“You start out, and you’re young, and you’re rockin’ and rollin’, and that’s what you do all your life. You become a little myopic about how old you actually are. I see pictures of myself at the [Madison Square Garden] recently, and I go, ‘That don’t look right.’ I got so old, I lost my hair. I was never a matinee idol to begin with, and there I am onstage still doing the same job I was doing when I was 16.”
There seems to be a bit of a debate as to what Billy Joel’s real height maybe, especially since the artist himself has made conflicting claims about how tall he is. In one interview, he compared himself to Cary Grant and claimed he was “six feet tall.”
In another interview, he shared his insecurity about his height after seeing a picture of him beside supermodel Elle MacPherson:
“Elle was so tall that I looked like Bubbles the Chimp next to her, and I realized this was just not going to work. I’m five seven and never knew I was so height-challenged until I saw those pictures – after that, people just assumed I was a dwarf.”
Billy Joel has three beautiful daughters, namely:
Why the huge age gap, you ask? Well, he had his first daughter with his second ex-wife Christie Brinkley in 1985. After nine years, the two split, and Billy went on to remarry his fourth and current wife, Alexis Roderick.
It was then that Billy welcomed two additional members to his family: Della Rose and Remy Anne. He was already in his late 60s – guess he didn’t let age stop him from expanding his family!
First of all, we’re not sure how this fire started, but apparently, there are burning questions about Billy Joel’s sexuality. Of course, only Billy himself can answer those queries with the truth.
But if his past relationships and dating history are any indications of his sexual preferences, Billy Joel seems to be as straight as one can get.
And if that’s the case, you can count him out of ‘toxic masculinity’. Billy Joel has no problem hanging out with and showing support for openly gay individuals. Take Elton John, for instance. The two toured together for 16 years.
Billy Joel was raised by his Jewish parents, Howard Joel and Rosalind Nyman in his childhood hometown Hicksville on Long Island. He has a younger sister, Judith, and a half-brother, Alexander.
His parents divorced when he was only 8 years old. Billy’s dad returned to Europe, and he and his sister were left under their mother’s care.
The Joel siblings have kept their relationship private from the media, as Billy rarely talks about his sister and half-brother. However, Billy has kept in touch with both of them by occasionally collaborating on projects or simply hanging out with them.
