Cultural Awareness and Sensitivity in Problem Gambling & Responsible Gambling
Register
Cultural awareness and sensitivity play a crucial role in addressing and treating problem gambling. Join problem gambling treatment and prevention experts as they share their experiences with awareness, education, data collection, and intervention efforts designed to increase effectiveness and mitigate gambling-related harm. During the presentation, experts will also discuss the increased use of artificial intelligence (AI) in the gambling industry and how AI tools can impact individual populations.
Learning Objectives:
- Understand the importance of cultural awareness and sensitivity in addressing problem gambling.
- Discuss the value of community engagement for assessment as it relates to diverse populations.
- Explore the ethical considerations surrounding the use of AI in responsible gambling across diverse populations.
Studies indicate that certain marginalized populations may face an elevated risk of problem gambling. However, culturally competent approaches to screening, engagement, and treatment for specific subgroups remain limited. This session will review evidence-based risk factors for populations of focus, with an emphasis on sexual minority and Latinx individuals, providing insights to inform targeted, culturally competent outreach and retention strategies. Additionally, key components of education, prevention, and intervention will be discussed to enhance their effectiveness for individuals in these groups who are at risk of gambling-related harm.

The gambling industry is experiencing a surge in AI applications, leveraging vast customer data and enhanced computing power. AI drives various functions, from marketing to fraud detection, and is endorsed by regulators for consumer protection. Algorithmic risk detection systems are widely embraced to minimize gambling-related harms and promote responsible gambling. Despite widespread adoption, a lack of transparency hinders effective policymaking and exposes consumers to potential harms. Using empirical findings from our latest research, this presentation delves into this ethical quandary, exploring the intricate balance between AI’s potential for innovation and the necessity of responsible gambling practices.
